5 Egg Substitutes in the pantry
Discover 5 egg substitutes you can find in your pantry for healthier and more versatile cooking. Perfect for those with dietary restrictions or seeking vegan options.

Eggs are getting so expensive and harder to find.  When baking quick bread, cookies, pancakes, waffles, and muffins try one of these pantry staples and save your eggs for a nice eggtastic omelette!

Flax Egg

1 tbsp of Ground Flax + 2 1/2 tbsp of Hot Water =1 egg

Combine ground flax and hot water in a small bowl and stir well.  Let sit to form a gel texture while you gather ingredients and preheat the oven. Add flax egg to your favorite baked goods! Great substitute up to two eggs in a recipe.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

1 tbsp of Vinegar + 1 tsp Baking Soda =1 egg

Combine vinegar and baking soda to create bubbles then add to batter to replace one egg in cakes and quick breads! Don't replace more than one egg with this substitution.
Use either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.  My Easy Apple Cider Vinegar recipe is a great way to use apple scraps to make yummy vinegar that works well for this substitution.

arrowroot powder

2 tbsp of Arrowroot + 3 tbsp Warm Water = 1 Egg

Combine arrowroot powder and warm water together and add to quick breads or cakes.  Did you know Arrowroot powder makes a great substitute for cornstarch when thickening is needed in gravy?

Applesauce
1/4 cup Applesauce=1 egg

Add applesauce to batter and stir into sweet desserts.  Use 1/2 cup of applesauce to replace 2 eggs.  Baked goods become more dense with applesauce and work well with quick breads if you want a more airy texture add 1 tsp of baking powder to each egg.

Chia Seeds
1 tbsp of Chia Seeds + 2 1/2 tbsp of Warm Water =1 egg

Combine chia seeds and warm water in a small bowl.  Let them sit about 15 minutes before adding to quick breads, waffles, and cookies.  You probably already guessed there is a two egg max on this substitution too!

Notes
  • Recipes that call for several eggs will not yield the best results using pantry friendly substitutions. Choose another recipe with fewer eggs.
  • For best results select recipes for quick breads, waffles, muffins and cookies with one to two eggs.
